The Substance Review: Body Horror With a Feminist Scalpel

Satire in the flesh

Coralie Fargeat’s premise is a single savage metaphor made literal: a discarded fitness star injects a serum that spawns a younger, “better” self, and the two halves of one woman go to war. The film is about the violence the beauty industry performs on women, and Fargeat’s masterstroke is to stop describing that violence and start staging it — in prosthetics, in gore, in a body-horror escalation that renders the abstract unbearably physical.

Maximalism as method

Subtlety is not the goal. Fargeat directs with a blaring, symmetrical, in-your-face style — extreme close-ups of injections and appetites, a sound design that makes you flinch — and the aesthetic overload is the argument. The film wants you to feel the grotesquerie of a system that treats women’s bodies as disposable, and it achieves that by refusing you any distance from it.

Moore’s fearless turn

Demi Moore anchors the delirium with a performance of real courage, mining her own iconography as a fading star to devastating effect. The role demands physical and emotional exposure most actors would refuse, and Moore’s willingness to be seen ageing, raging and disintegrating gives the satire a genuine human wound at its centre.

The final descent

The last act abandons restraint entirely for a climax of pure, cackling excess — a Grand Guignol crescendo that will delight some and exhaust others. It is the film’s thesis taken to its logical, blood-drenched extreme, and its refusal of good taste is precisely the point.

Verdict

The Substance is a gonzo feminist provocation — obvious, yes, but obvious with tremendous force and craft. A body-horror scream about ageing and worth that you will not soon forget.
