Stranger Things Review: The Nostalgia Machine That Earned Its Heart

Pastiche as craft

The Duffer Brothers wear their references on their sleeve — early Spielberg, John Carpenter, Stephen King, the whole Reagan-era multiplex — and the achievement of Stranger Things is to synthesise homage into something with its own pulse. The period detail is loving without being smug; the show remembers that the films it adores were, first, about children in genuine peril and the adults who failed or saved them.

The kids carry it

What keeps the machine from feeling merely mechanical is its ensemble of young performers, whose chemistry gives the D&D-and-bicycles adventuring real stakes. Millie Bobby Brown’s Eleven, all wordless power and wounded need, became an icon for a reason. The show understands that its monsters only matter because we’ve been made to love the children they threaten.

Wonder and dread in balance

At its best — particularly in its tighter early seasons — the series holds Amblin warmth and creature-feature horror in perfect tension: the small-town Indiana idyll and the rot leaking in from the Upside Down. The synth score, the neon-drenched palette, the practical creature effects all serve a single mood of childhood on the edge of something vast.

The cost of getting bigger

Success has a gravity, and later seasons swell — more characters, larger stakes, longer runtimes — trading the claustrophobic intimacy of a handful of kids in one town for blockbuster sprawl. The scale impresses; the heart occasionally has to shout to be heard over it.

Verdict

Stranger Things is a supremely well-made piece of pop entertainment that transcends its influences through sheer craft and casting. It thrills, and — when it remembers to stay small — it genuinely moves.
