A gorgeous, terrifying reinvention of the zombie drama — smart about power and hunger, and thrillingly staged. Essential genre television.

Hunger as politics

Writer Kim Eun-hee’s masterstroke is to make the plague inseparable from class. The dead rise from famine and the callous cruelty of the powerful, and Kingdom never lets you forget that the true horror is a ruling class that would rather feed a nation to monsters than surrender an inch of control. The zombies are the symptom; the rot is in the palace.

Period spectacle meets the sprint

The series is visually ravishing — hanbok robes, snow-covered fortresses, the elegant geometry of Joseon architecture — and it weaponises that beauty against sudden, ferocious violence. Director Kim Seong-hun stages the undead as a fast, daylight-averse tide, and the set-pieces, from a besieged manor to a frozen pond, are genuinely heart-stopping.

Intrigue with stakes

Between the outbreaks, Kingdom is a taut political thriller — a crown prince navigating a coup, a scheming clan, a physician who understands the plague’s true nature. Ju Ji-hoon and Bae Doona anchor it with gravity, and the courtly manoeuvring gives the horror something to be about.

Compressed brilliance

At twelve tight episodes across two seasons, the show never sags — a lean, propulsive contrast to the bloat that afflicts so much genre television. It leaves you wanting more, which is exactly right.

Verdict

Kingdom is the rare zombie property with something on its mind — beautiful, brutal and politically sharp. One of the finest genre series of its era.
