Socias por Accidente (2026) Review: Two Stars, One Con Man

Socias por Accidente is a Mexican comedy about two women conned by the same man, lifted by Angelique Boyer and Bárbara de Regil but built from very familiar parts.

Verdict

Mostly no. Fans of Angelique Boyer or Bárbara de Regil will enjoy their pairing, but anyone wanting a fresh or tonally steady comedy can skip it.

Is Socias por Accidente worth watching?

Mostly no, unless the two leads are the main attraction for you. Socias por Accidente is an agreeable star vehicle that does little with its premise beyond letting Angelique Boyer and Bárbara de Regil spar. Their chemistry is real and gives the film its best scenes, which goes a long way towards explaining why it became one of Mexico’s biggest comedies of 2026. The trouble is everything around them: the plotting is formulaic, and the swings between broad comedy and earnest melodrama rarely feel controlled.

What is Socias por Accidente about?

Alexa is a polished public-relations specialist; Regina is a hard-charging fitness trainer. The two women have nothing in common until they discover that they have been seeing the same man, a con artist working under a false identity, and that he has scammed them both and left them both pregnant. Forced together by that shared humiliation, they reluctantly team up to track him down, and the film’s real subject becomes the friendship that grows out of their mutual suspicion.

Socias por Accidente is directed by Ihtzi Hurtado, a Mexican production in Spanish that opened in March 2026 and runs 110 minutes. Boyer plays Alexa and de Regil plays Regina, with Diego Klein, Gabriela Platas, Laura Flores and Isabella Camil in the supporting cast.

Boyer and de Regil are the whole show

The casting is the film’s smartest decision. The script sets up Alexa and Regina as opposites, one polished and image-conscious, the other direct and physical, and Boyer and de Regil lean into that contrast rather than softening it. The comedy of their early scenes comes from two women who solve problems in opposite ways being forced to share one, and both actors understand the rhythm of that kind of odd-couple bickering.

When the film simply lets them trade barbs, it works. Critics singled out their easy rapport, and it is the quality that carries the story through its weaker stretches. It is also why the friendship, rather than the revenge plot, is the part audiences are likely to remember.

A revenge comedy running on autopilot

The problem is that the story around them rarely rises above its template. The wronged-women-unite setup has been done many times, and Socias por Accidente follows its beats closely, with few surprises in how the hunt for the con man unfolds. The man at the centre of it all is less a character than a device, which keeps the stakes low even when the plot insists they are high.

Hurtado keeps the pace brisk, and at 110 minutes the film never outstays its welcome. But the direction is functional rather than distinctive, content to deliver the expected situations cleanly rather than find a fresh angle on them.

Comedy and melodrama pulling in different directions

The film’s biggest weakness is tonal. It wants to be a knockabout caper and a sincere story about betrayal, pregnancy and trust at the same time, and it switches between those modes abruptly, so neither register gets the room to build. The emotional material, which could have given the comedy weight, ends up feeling like an interruption, and the jokes lose momentum each time the film pauses to be serious.

That uneven balance is a shame, because the premise has real potential for a sharper comedy about deception and the stories people tell to protect their pride. Here it settles for being pleasant.

Who should watch Socias por Accidente?

It suits viewers who already like Boyer or de Regil, and anyone looking for an undemanding Spanish-language comedy to watch with friends where the leads matter more than the plot. The subject matter, fraud and unplanned pregnancy, makes it a film for adults and older teenagers, though it plays as mainstream entertainment rather than anything edgy.

If you want more from the same shelf:

  • ¿Quieres ser mi novia?, another 2026 comedy from director Ihtzi Hurtado, for a romantic spin on the same crowd-pleasing style.
  • Instructions Not Included, a Mexican hit that mixes broad comedy with sentiment and handles the combination more confidently.
  • Y Tu Mamá También, for Mexican comedy-drama at its most daring if the formula here leaves you wanting more.

The verdict

Socias por Accidente has two committed leads and a solid premise, and their chemistry makes it easy company for an hour and a half. It is let down by predictable plotting and a tone that lurches between slapstick and melodrama, so it works best as a star vehicle for existing fans rather than a comedy worth seeking out.
