Yes, as a warm family film: Sitaare Zameen Par is a gentle, frequently funny sports comedy whose real stars are the players rather than Aamir Khan. The ensemble of neurodivergent performers brings genuine joy and spontaneity to the film, and its message of respect over pity lands. The reservations are a 155-minute running time that sags, a predictable underdog structure, and an arc for Khan’s coach that takes longer than it needs to.

What is Sitaare Zameen Par about?

Sitaare Zameen Par follows Gulshan, an arrogant assistant basketball coach played by Aamir Khan. After his temper and bad judgement land him in legal trouble, he is ordered to do community service: coaching a basketball team of players with intellectual disabilities.

Gulshan arrives with apprehension and plenty of prejudice. He does not know how to talk to his new players, and at first he treats the job as a punishment. Aamir Khan plays the student

Khan takes an interesting approach to his role. Gulshan is unlikeable at first, vain, short-tempered and insensitive, and Khan does not shy away from that. The character’s transformation is the backbone of the story, and Khan plays it with a light comic touch. He is at his best when reacting to the players, letting them lead the scenes.

The title deliberately echoes Taare Zameen Par, Khan’s 2007 film about a child with dyslexia, and fans will recognise the same interest in how society treats people who learn differently. But where that film centred a child’s inner world, this one centres the adult who needs to change, which makes it a smaller, more conventional film.

Where the formula and length show

The film follows the underdog sports template closely: early chaos, gradual bonding, setbacks and a tournament. Anyone who knows the genre will guess most of its beats. The subplot about Gulshan’s marriage and his personal issues takes up considerable screen time without adding much, and at 155 minutes the film could lose half an hour without harm. Some scenes also underline their message more heavily than necessary.
