Pushpa 2 - The Rule (2024)

Pushpa 2: The Rule (2024) Review: Swagger at Full Volume

Pushpa 2: The Rule is Sukumar's Telugu mass-action sequel in which Allu Arjun's smuggler king chases power and respect, bigger and louder but looser than the first film.

★★★½☆ 3.5/5

Verdict

Yes, with reservations. Fans of Pushpa: The Rise will get the swagger and set pieces they came for, but the punishing length and thin plot will test everyone else.

Is Pushpa 2: The Rule worth watching?

Yes, with reservations. Pushpa 2: The Rule delivers the swagger, spectacle and star power its fans want, and its best set pieces are genuinely electrifying, but it is a bloated sequel that mistakes size for story. Allu Arjun’s performance is a force of nature, and Sukumar stages several sequences with real audacity. The catch is its enormous length and a plot that meanders, so it works best for viewers already invested in the first film.

What is Pushpa 2: The Rule about?

Pushpa Raj (Allu Arjun), once a labourer, now runs the red sandalwood smuggling syndicate that he fought his way into in the first film. He has money and a growing network of political connections, and he is married to his sweetheart Srivalli (Rashmika Mandanna). But what he craves most is respect, and a perceived slight from a powerful politician sets him on a path to prove that he can bend the state itself to his will.

Standing in his way is Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat (Fahadh Faasil), the ruthless police officer whose rivalry with Pushpa has become deeply personal. Their feud, along with old enemies and new ones, drives the story.

Pushpa 2: The Rule is directed by Sukumar and made in Telugu, with dubbed versions released in several other Indian languages. The extended version currently streaming runs about 225 minutes, longer than the original theatrical cut, and the film became one of the biggest box-office hits in Indian cinema history.

Allu Arjun as a pure screen icon

This is Allu Arjun’s film from start to finish. His Pushpa, with his hunched shoulder, beard flick and defiant stare, has become one of the most iconic characters in recent Indian cinema, and Arjun plays him with an energy and conviction that are impossible to ignore. The film is built to celebrate him, and in its best moments, it succeeds brilliantly.

The standout sequence is a festival set piece in which Pushpa’s defiance, devotion and rage come together in an explosive mix of music, dance and violence. It is a bold, strange and exhilarating piece of mass cinema, and it shows Sukumar at his most inventive. Devi Sri Prasad’s songs and background music give the film much of its energy.

Fahadh Faasil and the rivalry that powers the film

Fahadh Faasil is the film’s secret weapon. His Shekhawat is petty, vindictive and unpredictable, and Faasil plays him with a sly, unsettling intensity that makes him a worthy opponent for Pushpa. Their confrontations, built on ego and humiliation as much as violence, are the most gripping parts of the film.

Rashmika Mandanna has more to do than in the first film, and Srivalli’s relationship with Pushpa gives the story some emotional grounding. But the supporting cast is often lost in the noise, and many characters are reduced to reacting to Pushpa’s exploits.

A sequel too big for its own good

The film’s biggest problem is its length. With little plot to sustain it, the story often feels padded, moving from set piece to set piece without building real momentum. The political plotline is thin, some subplots go nowhere, and the violence becomes repetitive. The sense of a coherent narrative, which the first film had, is often lost in the pursuit of spectacle. The film also sets up a further instalment rather than bringing the story to a satisfying close.

Who should watch Pushpa 2: The Rule?

It is for fans of Pushpa: The Rise, Allu Arjun and larger-than-life Telugu action cinema. Watch the first film before this one, and set aside a full evening. Expect intense, bloody violence, some strong language and adult themes, making it suitable for older teenagers and adults.

Where to go from here:

The verdict

Pushpa 2: The Rule is a loud, excessive and often thrilling sequel that gives fans exactly what they want, anchored by Allu Arjun’s commanding performance and Fahadh Faasil’s memorable villain. Its length and thin plot make it an endurance test, but its best moments are pure mass-cinema magic.
