Oscars 2025 recap: Anora and the major winners

The 97th Academy Awards took place on 2 March 2025, honouring films released in 2024. Anora won Best Picture. This recap covers that ceremony; it is separate from the 2026 Oscars results.

What did Anora win?

The Academy’s record lists Anora as the winner for Best Picture, Directing, Actress in a Leading Role, Film Editing and Original Screenplay. Sean Baker received the directing, editing and screenplay awards; Mikey Madison won the leading actress award.

Those categories describe different achievements. A shorthand such as “Best Picture winner” is useful for finding the film, but the individual categories tell a reader much more about what the ceremony recognised. Our Anora page is the starting point for the film itself.

Who won the acting awards?

Each entry above is an Oscar result. It should not be read as a claim that the same performer won every other awards ceremony that season. When comparing results across organisations, check each body’s own category names and ceremony year.

Which films won animation and international feature?

Flow won Animated Feature Film, and I’m Still Here, representing Brazil, won International Feature Film. Their placement in different categories is useful context, but it is not a ranking of one film above the other.

For a watchlist, a category can open a route into a part of cinema you want to explore. Animation, for example, describes a form rather than a single genre or intended audience. An international feature award similarly does not tell you whether a film is a drama, thriller or comedy. Follow up with a synopsis and review before deciding what fits your evening.
