Na Hong-jin’s Korean original runs 125 minutes. On Celluloid it belongs on every South Korea thriller list beside Park Chan-wook’s vengeance films — colder, sweatier, less baroque.

A pimp, a client, a city that will not help

Joong-ho is a former detective selling women; several have vanished. The client is already in motion. Ha Jung-woo plays the killer as a man who is late for something ordinary. Kim Yun-seok plays exhaustion as action. Kim Yoo-jung’s early credit is a reminder that this industry’s current stars walked through very dark sets as children.

No relief valve

Editorial 94, Metascore 82, Letterboxd 4.1: 84% composite. The film withholds the catharsis Hollywood thrillers treat as a right. That is why it still matters.
