Kanji Watanabe has been a stamp for thirty years. The diagnosis sends him to bars, to a young colleague, and finally to a patch of land that might become a playground if the bureaucracy can be bullied into mercy. Shimura’s face is the special effect. The wake in the second half — colleagues rewriting the story of a man they ignored — is as cruel and funny as any Kurosawa battle.
