# Spider-Verse Watch Order: Into, Across, and Beyond

How to watch the Spider-Verse animated films in order — Into the Spider-Verse, Across the Spider-Verse, whether you need the MCU, and what to know before Beyond.

## Should you watch Spider-Verse in release order?

Yes. Release order is the only order that matters: [*Into the Spider-Verse*](/movies/spider-man-into-the-spider-verse-2018/) (2018), then [*Across the Spider-Verse*](/movies/spider-man-across-the-spider-verse-2023/) (2023), then *Beyond the Spider-Verse* when it exists. *Across* ends on a cliffhanger; do not treat it as a standalone if you want Miles and Gwen’s arc intact.

You do not need the live-action MCU, Maguire, or Garfield films first. Those help Easter eggs. They are not plot. Scores live on each Celluloid title page.

## What is the Spider-Verse watch order?

**1. Into (2018) → 2. Across (2023) → 3. Beyond (forthcoming).** There is no chronological reshuffle that improves a first viewing. *Into* states the thesis — anyone can wear the mask — and introduces the Spider-Gang chemistry that *Across* spends two hours stress-testing.

*Beyond* is not a substitute for *Across*, and *Across* is not a recap of *Into* with a new villain. If you only have one film tonight, watch *Into*. It is a complete story. *Across* is the middle chapter of a trilogy and will feel unfinished because it is.

| Order | Title | Year | Standalone? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | [*Into the Spider-Verse*](/movies/spider-man-into-the-spider-verse-2018/) | 2018 | Yes |
| 2 | [*Across the Spider-Verse*](/movies/spider-man-across-the-spider-verse-2023/) | 2023 | No — cliffhanger |
| 3 | *Beyond the Spider-Verse* | Forthcoming | Unknown until it screens |

## Do I need the live-action MCU or Maguire/Garfield films?

No. Spider-Verse is its own multiverse comedy-drama. Cameo recognition helps Easter eggs; it is not required for plot. Skip *No Way Home* homework unless you simply want more Spider-Man that week. If you do want that, it is a separate evening — see our [*No Way Home* post-credits guide](/news/spider-man-no-way-home-post-credits/).

The animated films explain their own rules: different animation dialects, different canons, Miles as the centre. Live-action continuity will not decode Miguel, the Spot, or Gwen’s band. Treat crossovers as garnish.

## Can I start with Across the Spider-Verse?

You can, but you will miss why Miles’s choices hurt. *Into* establishes the “anyone can wear the mask” thesis and the Spider-Gang chemistry that *Across* spends two hours stress-testing. Starting on *Across* is how the cliffhanger feels like confusion instead of a turn.

If a friend already spoiled *Into*, you can still start there for craft — the film is doing more than plot. If you are picking for a kid who has never seen either, start with *Into* and stop if the first hour does not land. *Across* is longer, denser, and meaner about canon.

## Who should skip this trilogy-in-progress?

Skip *Across* as a first film if you need a closed ending the same night. Skip the whole project if hyper-stylised animation gives you a headache — that is a sensory warning, not a quality slight. Skip waiting for *Beyond* before watching *Into*; the first film does not depend on a sequel that has not opened.

People who bounce off Spider-Verse usually wanted a joke-a-minute MCU tone or a single-universe origin. *Into* is warmer and funnier; *Across* is the canon argument. Read the not-for line on each [title page](/movies/spider-man-into-the-spider-verse-2018/) before you promise a family screening.

## Where should I watch next?

Open each title’s Celluloid page for the four-input score and streaming: [Into](/movies/spider-man-into-the-spider-verse-2018/) · [Across](/movies/spider-man-across-the-spider-verse-2023/). Soundtrack context: [/news/spider-verse-soundtrack-guide/](/news/spider-verse-soundtrack-guide/). More orders: [/guides/watch-order/](/guides/watch-order/). We will not invent a *Beyond* score or a fake release slot — when that film screens, it gets a page.
