How to watch every Lord of the Rings movie in order — the Jackson trilogy, The Hobbit, War of the Rohirrim, and where The Rings of Power fits. Release vs chronological, with Celluloid Scores.

## What is the correct Lord of the Rings movie watch order?

**For first-time viewers, watch Peter Jackson’s trilogy in release order** — that is also story order for Frodo’s quest:

Do not start with The Hobbit if you have never seen these three. The trilogy is the core Middle-earth cinema experience on Celluloid.

**Treat The Hobbit as an optional prequel trilogy after Return of the King (or as its own binge).** Chronologically Bilbo’s adventure comes ~60 years before Fellowship; Jackson’s films also weave in later LOTR cameos.

*Desolation* is the only Hobbit chapter this site calls the strongest. The other two are optional even for people who liked *Fellowship*.

## Where does War of the Rohirrim fit?

**[*The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim*](/movies/the-lord-of-the-rings-the-war-of-the-rohirrim-2024/) (2024) is an anime film set 183 years before *Fellowship*.** Watch it anytime after the live-action films — it does not spoil Frodo’s quest and works as a Rohan legend side-quest. Celluloid Score **56%**: completists only, not a missing “movie 0.”

## Where does The Rings of Power fit?

**[*The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power*](/shows/the-rings-of-power/) (Prime Video, 2022–) is a Second Age television prequel — millennia before the movies.** It does not require the Jackson films, and the films do not require the show. Lore fans often watch RoP after the movies so Galadriel and Sauron land with more weight.

## Which Lord of the Rings movie is best to start with?

Skip The Hobbit on a first run if you only wanted Frodo’s quest — they are optional, longer, and tonally different. Skip *Rings of Power* until you know you want Second Age television; it is not a missing “movie 0.” Skip *War of the Rohirrim* if you needed live-action only. Skip the whole project if you cannot do three long films; start with [Fellowship](/movies/the-lord-of-the-rings-the-fellowship-of-the-ring-2001/) and stop if the first hour does not land.
